In the Teles Pires River watershed, one of the most common techniques currently used by fishermen to catch fish is to provide a food supplement commonly known as “cevas”. The purpose of this study was to compare the chemical composition of fillets from Brycon falcatus that were caught in both the presence and absence of cevas. The fish were sampled monthly and captured in the following conditions: the Tapaiúna River without cevas, the Teles Pires River with one ceva/100 m, the Celeste River with one ceva/500 m, the Verde River with one ceva/1000 m and the Cristalino River (control area). Subsequent to capture, the fish were euthanized and preserved on ice to determine their water, ash, crude protein and fat contents. Fillets of fish from the control area... |

The objective of this study was to identify a possible effect of food on the acceleration of decontamination in blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, containing diarrhetic toxins belonging to the okadaic acid (OA) structural group. An experimental protocol was designed to describe and compare the decontamination kinetics and detoxification rates of naturally OA-contaminated mussels that had either received or not received food for three weeks. The protocol was applied in two trials (in June 2006 and June 2007, called Ker06 and Ker07), conducted one year apart on samples of mussels collected in the same area, at the same season. Okadaic acid (OA), the main lipophilic toxin produced by the toxic alga Dinophysis acuminata, was analysed over the course of the... |

This study aimed to evaluate the digestibility of plant energetic ingredients, corn, sorghum and wheat bran, with and without phytase supplementation, in silver catfish (Rhamdia voulezi). The experimental design was completely randomized, represented by eight treatments, which consisted of the development of a reference diet and a test diet for each ingredient evaluated (corn, sorghum and wheat bran), with and without supplemental phytase. Diets were formulated so as to contain 70% reference feed and 30% test ingredient. The digestibility coefficients of dry matter and crude protein were significantly influenced only in relation to the evaluated ingredients. Phytase influenced the digestibility coefficients of energy and phosphorus, with interaction... |

Effects of sex, host-plant deprivation and presence of conspecific immatures on the cannibalistic behavior of wild Ascia monuste orseis (Godart) (Lepidoptera, Pieridae). The specialist cabbage caterpillar Ascia monuste orseis (Lepidoptera, Pieridae) feeds on plants of the Brassicaceae family, but may eventually ingest conspecific eggs and larvae during the larval stage. The present study examines feeding behavior of 4th and 5th instar cabbage caterpillars in relation to sex, host-plant deprivation and presence of conspecifics. We recorded number of egg ingested per larvae, developmental indices and duration of feeding, exploratory and resting behavior. Kale deprived caterpillars presented high rates of cannibalism, development delay and decreased... |

Growth and metabolism of juvenile European sea bass of a Western Mediterranean population were assessed at six constant temperatures (13, 16, 19, 22, 25 or 29 degreesC) in an 84-day trial. Duplicated groups of 84 fish (initial weight 80 I g) were held under O-2-concentrations close to saturation (87 mg l(-1)) and were fed to satiation. Mass gain increased as temperature increased from 13 to 25 degreesC. At 25 and 29 degreesC, growth was similar up to day 72, but a 6% decrease was observed by day 84 at 29 degreesC. Days 0-84 specific growth rates (SGR) were 0.45%,1.29% and 1.21% day(-1) at 13, 25 and 29 degreesC, respectively. The estimated temperature (7) for maximum SGR was 26 degreesC (SGR = 1.715 - 0.322T + 0.022T(2) - 4.233e(-4)T(3)). Feed intake (FI)... |

The red porgy (Pagrus pagrus)is an important commercial and recreational species with very good prospect for aquaculture. Because significant mortalities, the mass production of this species is limited. This paper describes three weaning strategies to investigate their effects on the survival and growth of red porgy larvae reared in laboratory: A)traditional three-step weaning (rotifers - Artemia - diet)(control); B)one-step early weaning by co-feeding (rotifers - Artemia + diet), and C)one-step direct early weaning (rotifers - diet). Sigificative differences were recorded among treatments (P0.05). Best survival rate (45.6 ± 7.6 percent)and growth (7.4 ± 0.5 mm)were found in treatment B. Results indicate that co-feeding red porgy larvae with inert and live... |

Results of the inclusion of GICABU and torula yeast in the diet for the Caribbean white shrimp (Litopenaeus schmitti) juveniles and cachaza oil in postlarvae diet are presented. Three completely randomised experimental designs were carried out to evaluate practical and semipurified diets, in juveniles and postlarvae respectively, with different by-products inclusion levels. Food was accepted and consumed in all the experiments. Shrimps reached a significantly higher growth (P<0.05) when torula yeast was included at 15, 20 and 25 % in diet, thus demonstrating the feasibility of the partial fish meal substitution. No significant differences were found (P>0.05) when GICABU was included up to 10 % in juvenile diet. Total replacement of sunflower oil by... |

On the base of samples of congrid eels captured in the South Western Atlantic Ocean, between 34 degree S to 40 degree S and 30m to 400m depth, from research cruises, commercial fleet (low scale and coastal fishing) and specimens preserved in ichthyological collections, four species were determined: Ariosoma opistophthalmum, Conger orbignyanus, Bassanago albescens and Bassanago nielseni. The latter is the first record in the region. Diagnosis of taxa from Family Congridae to species is given. Morphology, reproduction, feeding and distribution of the fish species found from the region are compared and discussed, as well as those from other parts of the world. On the other hand, numerous samples of ichthyoplankton were obtained from research cruises carried... |
